During the project, financial support will be granted for activities such as implementing new cybersecurity regulations. The aim is to strengthen cybersecurity both in Europe and nationally.
The National Coordination Centre for Cyber Security Research, Development and Innovation, operating within the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom’s National Cyber Security Centre, has been granted co-funding from the European Union's Digital Europe Programme for its new four-year continuation period. The new project builds on and expands the centre’s previous work.
– Although Finland’s cybersecurity landscape is in many ways strong, the needs and challenges are constantly evolving. This new project is a significant investment that will enable us to better identify gaps and opportunities to strengthen capabilities in the field of cybersecurity, support cooperation among Finnish actors both nationally and internationally, and create conditions for increasing international funding for RDI activities, says Jonas Sivelä, Head of the National Coordination Centre.
The European Commission is funding the project with four million euros, and nearly the entire amount will be distributed as financial support to Finnish actors. One of the core tasks of the coordination centre is to grant funding to strengthen national cybersecurity capacity. During the project period 2025–2029, financial support will be provided for implementing new cybersecurity legislation, as well as for the deployment and scaling of modern cybersecurity innovations. Information about upcoming calls will be published on the coordination centre’s website and at the national portal haeavustuksia.fi. In 2023–2024, the centre allocated €2 million to SMEs to support the deployment of cybersecurity solutions.
Join the national competence community
The coordination centre builds and develops a national cybersecurity competence community. The community aims to bring together key actors from the public, private and third sectors, and to foster cooperation to enable and improve cybersecurity-related research, development and innovation.
With the new four-year project, the centre will continue these efforts on a broader scale. The centre will organise networking and discussion events for the competence community, along with open info sessions on funding opportunities and matchmaking events that strengthen collaboration at both national and European levels. In addition, the centre supports Finnish actors at different stages of the EU application process and helps them find suitable project partners through its European networks.
Key tasks of the National Coordination Centre
The National Coordination Centre:
- is part of the EU-wide network of coordination centres, which aims to enhance cybersecurity resilience, support cybersecurity research, and accelerate technological development across the EU
- serves as Finland’s national contact point to the EU network and the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre in Bucharest
- strengthens national cybersecurity capacity and promotes participation of Finnish actors in cross-border EU projects, particularly under the Digital Europe and Horizon Europe programmes
- raises awareness of the work of national coordination centres and the broader cybersecurity community.
The European Cybersecurity Competence Centre’s National Coordination Centre (NCC-FI) officially began operations in early 2023 under Traficom. The activities of the coordination centre are funded by the EU and the State of Finland.
